Orders Up!

Finding out my husband was receiving a permanent change of station (PCS orders), is something I’ll never forget. I actually found out before him, which is pretty unusual. Here’s how it went down.

In Colorado, I was part of a Family Readiness Group (FRG) that assisted families of service members by hosting events and keeping everyone updated with the happenings of the company. One day, our group was at the company going over a few things when we overheard some of the higher officials talking. Eavesdropping ever so gracefully, I was able to discern that their conversation was about who was down on orders when they returned from overseas. At this point, my butt was in the seat while my ears were around the corner, trying to make out even the first syllable of my husband’s name.

“Smith… Jenkins… Matthews… Tedrow…”

And there it was.

The list went on, but I checked out after his name. So there I was, sitting in utter disbelief. It took me a minute to internalize that I would be moving to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, and leaving behind one of the best friends I’d ever made. Essentially, I was leaving my whole “friend family” in Colorado.

Once the dust settled on the orders, it was time to get a plan rolling. It was nerve racking having to handle these things from states away. Prior to this, we had never considered buying a home. We didn’t even realize it was possible while in the military. We’d heard that we could only use our VA loan once, which is a huge myth by the way! In August of 2012 we made a trip to Iowa for a wedding, and stopped through Missouri to do some house hunting. We toured about six homes before finding “the one”, and we knew right away that it was perfect. With our preapproval in hand, we made an offer that day.

We headed back to Colorado the next morning. It was a long ride of angst and jitters, awaiting news that could change our lives. Just miles after we hit the road, we received the call with a counter offer—AND WE ACCEPTED! Our excitement and screaming was so intense that we got some pretty crazy looks form the cars passing by. But we didn’t care, we were homeowners! Woo-hoo!

The move to Missouri was rather smooth, as we had compliant and understanding sellers who were willing to work around our timeline. However when dealing with the military, things can change in the blink of an eye. Would you believe me if I told you that since then, we’ve come down on orders to relocate back to Colorado? Plot twist, right?! Fortunately, my husband was able to arrange for us to remain here at Fort Leonard Wood for the next few years.

To date, purchasing our dream home has been one of the proudest moments of our lives. We always equated owning a home to living the American dream. That dream is now our reality.
